A man behind the wheel of his car with his own thoughts, driving for the sake of it, is the most free I have ever felt. Thank you for this vignette. I lived in Miami for a few years and late night drives where my faviorte thing. I was, as I beilve you are, a masive fan of Miami Vice. I don't think the feeliing of those nights will ever leave me.
I do this in new cities, no real plans, meandering on two wheels a la David Byrne in Bicycle Diaries, and within a couple days can cover significant ground and variety of hoods.
Nice piece. I've been doing this for years too (I'm also an inveterate city walker, like yourself). There's nothing like the slivery road under the moonlight with city lights sliding by, each moment a different scene from a movie--or a life. If you can get your hands on a classic European convertible, all the better.
Many years ago I got to make a short film about this very feeling. LA is especially conducive to chasing it, often with success.
